The Young Diplomat Paper Presentation Event

The Young Diplomat ‘Paper Presentation' held on 20th March 2021 was organized by Lyceum under the theme 'UN amidst the pandemic.' The welcome note was addressed by the HOD of the Department, Dr. Madhumati Deshpande, followed by a mesmerising dance performance by Anushua Banerjee of 4 MAIS. The Event was formally declared open by Dean of Social Science of CHRIST (Deemed to be University) Tony Sam George, who elaborated on the juxtaposition of academic freedom with academic resilience. The Event's judges were introduced as Dr. Prakash Pannerselvam of NIAs and Dr. Anurag Tripathi of Christ (Deemed to be University). The first paper was presented by Anurag Roy from Amity University, who wittily introduced John Rawl's Veil of ignorance and dependency theory in the mishandling of the pandemic by WHO. The next paper was presented by Aparajita Pauranik from CHRIST, who focused on two main dichotomies of indecisiveness of WHO and its disastrous effect on Indian Expatriates in Kuwait and the politicisation of the pandemic. Arsh Moge from Meghnad Desai Academy of Economics presented the third paper. His presentation was on the positive and normative impact of the pandemic on the global supply chains. Denzel Joyson from St. Joseph's College of Arts and Science presented a historical analysis of the United Nations and its failure to manage crises like the current pandemic. Harshini from St. Anne's College, Hyderabad, presented a paper showing the exacerbation of existing modern global societal problems. Wonchibeni Patton from CHRIST presented a very basic yet very profound understanding of the UN through the lens of realism theory of international relations. She presented China's power dynamics as a global player and its role in WHO, and the use of sanctions by other nations. Irfan Nazir from JNU described the Chinese perspective on the pandemic. He looked to find critiques of the American narrative on the pandemic. Mansha Chawla looked at the larger macroeconomic impact of the pandemic crisis. She looked at the empirical data on shrinking economies and the industries worst affected by it. Next, we had Parvathy Sailesh from CHRIST, who discussed the United Nations' role in COVID-19 era International Trade. The last presenter of the day was Sakshi Oza from Amity University, Noida, who, with her topic 'WHO and Pandemic Politics,' wished to explore the transitions in society attributed to the spread of COVID-19. In the Valedictory ceremony, the results were announced, wherein Irfan Nazir bagged the first position, the second place was achieved by Parvathy Sailesh, followed by Wonchibenni Paton securing the third position. The winners then shared their experiences with research, affirming the importance of primary resources in the research process and how research enabled them to push the boundaries of what they knew. Finally, the event came to an end with the formal vote of thanks proposed by Ashwathy Anil from 4MAIS. Overall the programme was incredibly informative and provided a rich array of perspectives for a topic that is incredibly relevant in the international forum. Ajay Gudavarthy is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Political Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
