LYCEUM - BATTLE OF BRAINS


LYCEUM, the Post-Graduate Students’ Association for the department of International Studies and History, wishes to organize an inter-departmental Academic Fest in December, 2017.

Objectives of the fest
1)      To increase awareness about the department of International Studies and History in general and Masters in International Studies in particular thereby, making our presence felt on campus.
2)      To create space for inter-disciplinary interaction, learning and intellectual exhanges. 
3)      To encourage an environment of greater questioning, analysis and discussion.

The proposed plan for the 2- day fest (9th and 10th February, 2018)  
Inauguration of the Fest
Date: 9th February 2018
Venue: Seminar Hall, Block 2
Time: 9 am - 10 am

The inauguration will begin with a short prayer and the lighting of the lamp.
The Chief Guest shall give the inaugural address and declare the Fest open. 
Keeping in mind the aforementioned objectives, the following events have been discussed and decided upon.

1)      Model United Nations (IRMUN) - Exclusively for MAIS students
Date: 9th February, 2018
Venue: Panel Room and Seminar Hall, Block 2. 
Time: 10:30 am - 4:30 am
1.      Model United Nations (MUN) will have 2 committees-

a.       Security Council (UNSC) 
b.      General Assembly (UNGA)

2.      The agenda for Security Council: Refugee Crisis around the world

The agenda for General Assembly: Nuclear Proliferation and its security challenges in the contemporary politics
3.      Security Council: Room 613
       General Assembly: Room 612
Prizes: Total 9 prizes to be won
-          2 best delegates each from General Assembly and Security Council
-          2 best delegates Commendations each from General Assembly and Security Council
-          5 best delegates Special Mention : 3 from General Assembly and 2 from Security Council.

2)      Foreign Policy Quiz - Open only to 3rd UG students and PG students of CHRIST
Date: 10th February, 2017
Venue: Council Room, Central Block
Time: 9 AM – 11 Am
The participants will have to enroll in teams of 2. Cross-departmental teams are allowed. The Quiz will have questions based on foreign policy of United States, Russia, China, India in Post-2001. Each round will have direct questions for each team. If a team gives a wrong answer/ chooses to pass the question, the question gets passed to the next team. 
The quiz will have 3 rounds:
Round 1: Preliminary Round (Top 8 teams move to Round 2)
Round 2: Final Round
PRIZES:
1st Prize for the Best Team - Ra. 3000
2nd Prize for the Runner up Team - Rs. 2000
3rd Prize - Certificates
3)      Just a Minute (JAM) - Open only to 3rd UG students and PG students of CHRIST
Date: 10th February, 2018
Venue: Room 105, Central Block
Time: 11:30 AM- 1 PM
Just a Minute (JAM) is an event that requires the participants from across the departments to speak on any given topic non-stop for one minute. The participant picks one chit among many, gets 1 minute to prepare herself/ himself and then begins his/her speech. It will be an intra-departmental event. The focus shall be on current affairs in the field of Politics, Economics, History and youth- oriented issues.
Prizes: Certificates for 1st and 2nd Prize
4)   Classical Debate - Open only to 3rd UG students and PG students of CHRIST
Date: 10tb February, 2018
Time: 12 Noon- 1 PM
Venue: Sky View, 10th Floor, Central Block
Debate Structure:
1.      Teams of 2 students compete with each other. Each team debates upon the topic as interpreted by the team that wins the toss.
2.      Both teams get 1 minute 30 seconds each to make their opening remarks, 5 minutes for their core arguments and defense, and 2 minute 30 seconds to make their closing statements.
(Each Speaker: 1.30 + 5 + 2.30= 9 minutes)
3.      The Adjudicators decide who wins and awards points for the same. 
4.      This is an interdepartmental event
Prizes – Best Speaker - Rs 2000 + Certificates
Most Promising Speaker (to encourage first time debaters) - Rs 1000 + certificates 
Participation Certificates to all finalists

5)   Poster Making - Open only to 3rd UG students and PG students of CHRIST
Date: 10th February, 2017
Time: 9 AM- 11 AM
Venue: In front of Knowledge Centre, 6th Floor, Central Block
The participants will be given a theme which would be open to broad interpretations. The participants have to make posters based on their interpretation of the theme provided. The objective of this activity is to bring out the creative side of students and to promote fine arts as a tool for raising issues. 
Prizes: Certificates to 1st and 2nd prizes
Theme to be announced on the spot.

Valedictory Session
Time: 3 PM- 4 PM

Will include the distribution of prizes, the 2- day Fest report and the Vote of Thanks.

Ajay Gudavarthy is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Political Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.                                   With immense pleasure and happiness, we would like to inform you that the Department of International Studies, Political Science and History, CHRIST (Deemed To Be University) has signed a MoU with Ashoka University – Harvard Yenching Institute. This MoU is to build academic and research resources on China Studies and related areas as a thriving discipline. It will also enable the department to create new knowledge in India about different countries, particularly on China. The MoU will help the department to provide promising scholars studying China with the opportunity to share their work and knowledge with a wider audience through Lectures, Courses, and Publications and enhance research opportunities for young post-doctoral scholars.
