St. Joseph
College (Autonomous) in association with National Institute of Advanced
Studies, Bangalore University and Christ University held the Panel Discussion
on India – US elections: Mapping the trajectory at St. Joseph Auditorium on the
10th of August. The event was graced by former ambassador of India
to Russian Federation PS Raghavan, Lt. General Prakash Menon, Prof. Narendra
Pani and. The panel discussion was chaired by prof. MJ Vinod, from Department
of Political Science, Bangalore University.
The event commenced
with recitation of verses from religious texts seeking blessings of the
almighty, followed by welcome address by Fr. Melvin, Principal, St. Joseph
College and Dr. Subhash Chandra of NIAS. The panel discussion focused on the
diplomatic, defence and economic aspects of relations between India and US. Mr.
Raghavan touched upon the strategic partnerships with relation to US relations
with Pakistan and China and Nuclear deals between India and US and India’s
recent inclusion in the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the challenges that
surround the India – US relations.
The next
presentation was given by Lt. Gen Prakash Menon on the defence equipments and
the reasons behind Technology transfers denials by US to India for the fear of
the technology being indigenized by India and military exercises conducted by
India in collaboration with Japan in the Malabar Bay. The final presentation by
Prof. Narendra Pani focused on India’s standing in WTO and impacts of Economic
reforms and the creation Least Developed Nations Group in the WTO of which
Nepal is a part. This was later followed by an interactive session. The
programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Madhumati Deshpande from
Department of International Studies and History, Christ University
