 Anchal Bhowmick and Jogita Rajbongshi

The Skill Development sub-committee on Media under the Department of International Studies, Political Science and History organized the Career Skills Series Talk by Deepak Sharma, Broadcast Journalist of the BBC World Service since 2017 on Career Opportunities in Media under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Manoharan N.

The session started with a brief introduction of the guest speaker Deepak Sharma by Dr. Manoharan N followed by the lecture of the speaker himself who touched upon the various opportunities in the field of journalism. He highlighted the various branches of the media which are primarily the mainstream media and the alternative media and what skills are best suited for pursuing career in this field. His talk was optimistic as he quoted figures from the internationally recognized surveys which show positive career growth opportunities in the media. The speaker also focused on the ever-widening scope of media through the alternative new age options which calls for innovative ideas to harness the untapped potential of this sector. This can happen through entrepreneurial and technological capabilities, catering to the needs of the wide variety of population in the country. He focussed attention on the unexplored areas in journalism like satire journalism and virtual journalism. Moreover, the talk was very encouraging as it enthralled the attention to more pressing issues in journalism like fake news, psychological aspects, gendered perspectives while he mentioned that the camera department in media is mainly male dominated and thus encouraged more women to participate in that segment.

The next segment of the talk was the Q/A session where the students enthusiastically participated.  A lot of questions were raised regarding the opportunities of an IR student in the field of media and journalism. To which the speaker replied that having a degree in international relations is a bonus in this sector as it will help to have expertise in an area. Also, knowledge about foreign languages would add value to the skill set. Besides, the importance of digital literacy; future of Satire in India; flexibility in the job profiles of the media units and many more such questions were delightfully responded by the speaker. The speaker encouraged the students to take up media and journalism as a career option. Drawing practical examples from the society he tried to elaborate on the different aspects of social media and how actually it works. He also mentioned about the power of a good content and how irony/satires are the best expression to make people understand complicated things. His extensive job profile and experiences helped the students to understand the dynamics of media and journalism.

Lastly, the talk was concluded with a vote of thanks by Medha Bhagwat from 3MAIS.
