UN Day

The Model United Nations Society of Department of International Studies, Political Science and History organized an event on the occasion of United Nations Day on 23rd October 2021. It was celebrated with competitions throughout the week like Movie review, Book review, Photography, meme making, and creative writing. The occasion began with the virtual welcome address by Dr Madhumati Deshpande, Co-ordinator, Department of International Studies, Political Science and History followed by the offline address by Dr Jose CC, Pro Vice Chancellor, Christ (Deemed to be university) who spoke about the importance of coming together for prosperity and peacekeeping. The emcees for the day were Komal Salecha and Shrestha Medhi from 2MAIS. The event was then graced by a talk by the chief guest, Mr James George Chacko who is the country programme advisor, East Asia and the Pacific Cluster, Country Office Support and Quality Assurance, UNDP Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific. He holds a postgraduate degree in International Development and politics from the United Kingdom and has 20 years of experience in International Development. Other than working with various UN wings, he has also worked in the private sector with consulting firms in the Asia Pacific region. He touched upon many important issues prevailing in the contemporary world like COVID-19 and vaccine inequality, climate change, and also spoke about the important role young people can play in promoting peace, solidarity and humanity. Many important questions pertaining to restructuring of the United Nations, China’s dominance in the South-East Asia region, etc. were raised by the audience and effectively answered by him. The winners for all the five events were then announced with one winner and one runner up per event. The first position for “Cinematic Chase with SDGs”, a movie review competition was bagged by Suyash Dwivedi and the runner up was Sharika Balachandran. The judge of “Click”, a photography competition, announced Vinod Kumar as the winner and Veda Madhudev as the runner up. Curator’s Dialect, a creative writing competition was won by Srishti Gautam and the runner up was Debanjali Sarkar. The first position for “Match of Memelords”, a meme-making competition was bagged by Lavanya R and the runner up for the event was Veda Madhudev. Kavya Manoj bagged the first position for “Read. React. Review”, a book review competition and Vidhi Jain became the runner up. The event then came to an end with the vote of thanks by Samiksha Aind from 1MAIS.

The Department of International Studies, Political Science and History organised a webinar on Populism titled ‘The Multifaceted Nature of Populism’ by Ajay Gudavarthy. Ajay Gudavarthy is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Political Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has been a visiting fellow at Goldsmiths, University of London, and a Charles Wallace Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
