Battle of the brains: Event Details and Rules

With just 7 days to go, the battle about to begin, we bring you the list of the events and rules and other related information, to enable you to make informed choices and ensure your victory in the battle. Th details of the events are as follows:

The event is divided into In - House and Inter -  Departmental Events. Which are as follows:

  • IN HOUSE EVENTS (DAY 1)

  • INTER-DEPARTMENT EVENTS

  1. ESSAY WRITING

Topic: Which global issue currently should be of utmost importance for the world leaders? Substantiate and propose a solution to it.

Guidelines for essay writing:
  1. The essay should be completely a product of one’s own thought.
  2. The essays will undergo a plagiarism check. Not more than 15% of plagiarism will be accepted.
    The essay should be between 1200-1500 words.
  3. Participants need to ensure that they use good diction with original and interesting ideas. They must also ensure the content of essay should be versed with the topic and should be logically organized & written in clear words. Limit your essay to cohesive and well-reasoned arguments.
  4. The medium for the essay is English.
  5. A standard format of Times New Roman of font size 12 with 1.5 line spacing should be followed by all the participants. The essays should be justified.
  6. The decision of the judges will be final.
  7. Last date for the submission of the essays is 10 December 2016.
  8. The essays should be mailed.
  9. The selected essays will be called for the presentation on14 Dec 2016.
Your essay will be judged on these points:
  1. Grammar and style: Your essay will be graded on grammar, spelling and use of Standard English. Therefore, proofread your essay before you submit.
  2. Use of support: You will be graded on intelligent use of sources to support your arguments and ideas. 
  3. Originality and creativity: Originality will be rewarded, particularly when an essay demonstrates creative and analytical thinking.
  4. Strength of your argument: you will be judged according to how strong you build up your argument.


  1. DEBATE

Topic: THBT is surveillance the answer to threats to National Security?

Guidelines for debate:
  1. The participants will be divided into two teams, one team in support of the resolution (pro) and one team in opposition to the resolution (con). The most common number of members per team is two, but more than two may be used.
  2. The debaters should present constructive arguments. Constructive arguments should be based upon three to five major points which are logically developed and substantiated by factual evidence in support of a particular position.
  3.  Debate will be conducted according to the following procedures:
a)      The chairperson and the debaters will be seated separately.
b)      The chairperson will briefly introduce the subject that is to be debated.
c)      The chairperson will introduce the first speaker from the team in support of the resolution. Each speaker will be introduced when he/she is given the floor.
d)     The first speaker from the team in support of the resolution will be allowed 10 minutes to present the constructive argument he/she has prepared. The timekeeper will ring the warning bell at the 9th minute to indicate the speaker to conclude the argument. 
e)      The first speaker from the team in opposition to the resolution will be introduced and asked to give his/her constructive argument. This procedure of presenting pro and con speakers alternately will continued until each debater has given his/her constructive argument. After the first speaker, those who follow will probably need to adjust their prepared speeches to allow for what has been said by preceding speakers. 
f)       "Rebuttal arguments" follow the series of constructive arguments given by both teams. The team in opposition to the resolution always begins the rebuttal argument series. Each debater would be given an opportunity to speak extemporaneously for 1 minute, attempting to weaken the position presented by the opposing team. Rebuttal arguments also provide an opportunity to answer attacks that have been made by the opposing team. No new issues may be introduced during rebuttal arguments.
g)      The performance of the debate will be evaluated by the judges.



  1. POSTER MAKING

Topic: A flash back on 2016

Guidelines for Poster Making:

1.      Drawing / painting must be on plain A3 white sheets which will be provided to each participant

2.      Acceptable tools of drawing / painting include pencil, crayon, water color, oil paint etc. Photographs, wires, and other 3D objects are not acceptable. The completed artwork must be on a flat piece of paper.

3.      The drawing / painting must not include words, national flags, or slogans.

4.      Name and age of participant as well as the department name must be clearly mentioned on the back of poster in the English Language.

5.      The theme "A Flash Back on 2016" should be the main focus of the poster.

6.      No text (including theme title, name, etc.) should be written on the front of the poster.

7.      A poster should be an individual effort.

The Department of International Studies, Political Science and History organised a webinar on Populism titled ‘The Multifaceted Nature of Populism’ by Ajay Gudavarthy. Ajay Gudavarthy is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Political Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
